CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A tech company in Charlottesville is being recognized for its groundbreaking analysis that could help treat chronic illnesses. New research done by AMPEL BioSolutions shows that a blood sample, when paired with its computer coding, can detect disease activity in patients who have lupus or other autoimmune diseases. The work was recently published in Nature’s Scientific Reports. AMPEL believes this data could help detect disease symptoms to prevent hospitalization.
“It provides hope for people with chronic diseases, autoimmune diseases, lupus, because right now they could be fine and tonight they could be in the emergency room with a life-threatening flare,” Amrie Grammer, the co-founder of AMPEL BioSolutions, said. “So if they were able to do a blood test either at home with a finger stick or going into a clinic that would predict ‘you’re starting to get worse, go see your doctor,’ and also maybe ‘you need to change your medication.’” The device that will produce this information is still in the processing stage, and the company is waiting for investors.
In the future, AMPEL says the data could detect flare-ups in real time.
